On 21 May 2025, the University of Cyprus will host a joint workshop organised by EUREC and the EERA Joint Programme on Smart Grids, under the auspices of the PHAETHON Centre of Excellence. The event, titled "Achieving the 2030 targets in line with the long-term strategic objectives of the energy transition that capture the aspirations of the Green Deal and REPowerEU: What it means to island Cyprus using the experience of more mature markets?", will bring together key stakeholders from Cyprus and across Europe—including representatives from the Ministry of Energy, TSO, DSO, EAC, and leading research organisations—to discuss how the island can align its energy transition pathway with the EU’s 2030 and long-term climate goals.

The morning session will focus on what meeting the objectives of the European Green Deal and REPowerEU means for Cyprus, using insights from more mature energy markets. Topics will include strategic planning, policy alignment, and stakeholder coordination.

In the afternoon, the discussion will turn to the challenges and opportunities presented by high shares of renewable energy and the crucial role of flexibility in maintaining system security. A key highlight will be the presentation of the EERA JP Smart Grids White Paper, which outlines critical challenges, innovation priorities, and policy recommendations for enabling a secure and decarbonised electricity system. Participants will also explore smart grid innovation, storage solutions, and digitalisation strategies to support the island’s transition to a resilient and future-ready energy system.

This workshop will provide a unique opportunity for collaborative dialogue and knowledge exchange between policymakers, regulators, industry actors, and researchers working at the forefront of Europe’s energy transition.
